Venture Capital and Private Equity in Africa

Connecting investors and entrepreneurs

Dear Members,

First, let me thank the members who brought this issue to my attention. Together we can prevent these things from happening and deal with them when they do!

Needless to say, this network is only as useful as the people part of it. Many of you have been contacted by Rose and have identified her profile as part of a scam. Please bring these individuals to my attention so we can ban them from the site.

If you ever receive a message you find 'dubious' in nature please post it to this public forum. We can review as a community and decide if the profile should be blocked from the system.

Thanks for your understanding and for working with me to tackle any unwanted messages / members.

Regards,

Ben

Hello

My name is vera. i saw your profile today and became intrested in you,i will also like to know you more, and if you can send an email to my email address,i will give you my pictures here is my email address (Veraand00@yahoo.com)I believe we can move from here! Am waiting for your mail to my email address above because i have alot to tell you,
Lot's of love,

Miss Vera.

Needless to say this is not acceptable.
Moving forward, I have asked all members to fill out their profiles and add pictures. Members who cannot do this will be removed from the system. I will also monitor new members to make sure that these individuals stay out of the network. If the problem persists, then I will have to screen each new applicant before accepting them.

Needless to say, I hope the community continues to work with me in tackling this problem. Please bring these cases to my attention so we can deal with them as soon as they come up.

Thanks for your understanding and continued support.

Regards,

Ben

Ben -- Personally I wouldn't worry too much about this. We are presumably all intelligent adults, capable of identifying and deleting this type of bs. I received a message last week and just deleted it, didn't think twice.

If someone really wants to spend their time sending out these dubious messages, they could easily enough upload a photo or comply with any other hurdles you set. I say don't lose sleep, ask members to quietly forward you these messages and delete the offending members. This is an admin issue -- not something that needs to be elevated by posting this garbage to the entire group.

I'd be much more concerned about the level of discourse. Despite the growth in members the vast majority are silent. I'd spend my time exploring ways of getting more involvement from real members rather than focusing on these oddballs. Just my 2 cents. Best Joel

Well you make a good point. Do we focus our energies on the lowest or highest common denominator? However, I do have to say that I take this seriously and will work to keep the quality of members as high as possible. I do not want this platform to dilute over time and it is important we all work together on this. Thanks for the feedback and your views are well received!

Open communications do bring attention to the thieves in life. As soon as you say wealth, capital, or luxury it attracts the attention of the fakes in life. I would also like to say that it is pretty obvious that many members of the NING community engage in email advertising. Some is pretty harmless but then again some is as bad if not worse than spam. What is worse? Your email information being given or sold to someone who sends you a virus, worm, or Trojan Horse.
Love & Peace, Deborah
