Norfund invests in Africado
Norfund has recently invested USD 4 million in Africado Limited, Tanzania's first avocado plantation. The plantation is situated on the slopes of Kilimanjaro and has already created jobs for about 100 people, and this number is expected to increase. The plantation creates an alternative source of income for the small scale farmers in the area, where coffee is the dominating product today.

The plantation has 80 hectare available for avocado trees but the plan is to expand to 140 hectare already in 2010, with the aim to involve local farmers in the production. The first harvest will take place towards the end of 2010 before they will be transported on ships to Europe.

"KILIMO KWANZA"- Tanzania ‘Agric first’ scheme gains steam
The Tanzania Government has launched irrigation guidelines for all its 120-plus districts in readiness for implementing the planned green revolution code named 'Kilimo Kwanza' - Kiswahili for 'Agriculture First'. Launching the irrigation guidelines last week in Dar es Salaam, the Minister for Water and Irrigation, Prof Mark Mwandosya said, "The Government accords great importance to irrigation development as one of the ways in attaining food security, increased production and increased income for the rural community."

The irrigation guidelines, which have been compiled by the government with support from the Japanese Government through the Japan International Co-operation Agency (JICA) in the last three years, aim at enhancing Tanzania's capacity to plan, design, implement, operate and carry out maintenance of irrigation schemes.

The Minister underscored the importance of irrigation saying Tanzania, which has about 30 million hectares of arable land, but was using irrigation agriculture in less than one (1%) per cent of its land, had to change to irrigation farming.
